Ethical guidelines on the use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching and learning

The European Commission released a set of ethical guidelines for educators on the use of AI and data in education.

Artificial intelligence systems have become commonplace in our daily lives. It is crucial to have a greater knowledge of their effects on the world around us, especially on education and training, as they continue to change.

Fundamental knowledge of AI and data use is necessary for educators and students to interact positively, critically, and ethically with this technology and fully realize its promise given the rapid increase in its use.

In this context, on October 25, the European Commission released a set of ethical guidelines for educators on the use of AI and data in education. These guidelines are an action of the Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027.

They dispel common and pervasive misconceptions about artificial intelligence (AI) that could mislead people and raise concerns regarding its application, particularly in education.

Teachers who have little to no expertise with digital education can nevertheless use the recommendations, which are aimed at elementary and secondary educators.

Practical guidance is provided to educators and school leaders on how to effectively integrate the use of AI and data into school curricula while also addressing the ethical considerations and needs that drive the guidelines.

The guidelines also offer suggestions for ways to increase awareness and include the community in the discussion of developing skills for the ethical use of AI and data among teachers and educators.
